AquaCompat Privacy Policy

AquaCompat collects very little about you. It uses Google Tag Manager to run Google measurement tags, such as Google Analytics, which set cookies and record how pages are used. It has no accounts and no forms that store what you type, and the compatibility tools run in your browser and send nothing you enter to us. The other exceptions are the server logs kept by our hosting provider, which may record your IP address, and Amazon, which applies its own cookies and privacy notice once you follow a product link. This policy takes effect on 21 October 2026.

Who runs this site and what does this policy cover?

AquaCompat is a static reference site about which freshwater aquarium species can share a tank, published at aquacompat.com by the AquaCompat Editorial Team. A static site is a set of ready-made pages: there is no database behind it and no server-side code that reacts to what you do. This policy covers every page on aquacompat.com. It does not cover the external websites the pages link to, such as the published sources listed under each page or Amazon.

What does AquaCompat collect, and what does it not?

AquaCompat collects usage statistics through Google tags and nothing personal through the site itself. In practice that means:

  • Google Tag Manager and analytics. Every page loads Google Tag Manager, which runs the Google measurement tags set up for the site, such as Google Analytics. Those tags set cookies (for example _ga) and send Google information such as the pages you view, how you arrived, your approximate location derived from your IP address, and your device and browser type. AquaCompat uses this only to see which pages are read and how the site performs. Google processes this data under its own privacy policy. You can block it with your browser’s cookie settings, a content blocker, or Google’s Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
  • No cookies of our own. Apart from the Google cookies above, AquaCompat sets no cookies.
  • No advertising code. The site currently runs no ad network scripts. If that changes, this policy will be updated before any such code goes live.
  • No accounts. There is nothing to sign up for and no login.
  • No stored form data. The site has no comment, newsletter or contact forms that store what you type.
  • No third-party fonts. The typefaces are served from aquacompat.com itself, so loading a page does not contact a font service.

What happens to the species you enter in the tools?

Nothing leaves your device. The compatibility checker and the stocking calculator work entirely in your browser. When you run one, the page downloads a single data file of published species values from aquacompat.com and does the calculation locally. The species, tank size and fish counts you choose are not sent to AquaCompat, are not stored in your browser by the site, and are gone when you close or reload the page.

Load the page: The browser downloads the published data file. Choose species and counts: Calculations run locally on the device. Close or reload: The site does not retain those selections.
Aquarium tool choices stay in the browser. Based on the accompanying guide and its cited data.

What do the hosting provider's server logs record?

Like any website, aquacompat.com is served by a hosting provider whose servers may log each request. A typical log entry holds your IP address, the date and time, the page or file requested, your browser's user-agent string and the page that referred you. These logs are kept by the hosting provider for operating and securing the service, under its own retention rules. AquaCompat does not use them to build profiles of visitors, does not combine them with other data and does not sell them.

What happens when you click an Amazon link?

Clicking a product link takes you to Amazon, and from that point Amazon's own cookies and privacy practices apply, not this policy. AquaCompat takes part in the Amazon Associates program, so product links carry an affiliate tag that tells Amazon the visit came from this site; Amazon uses that to credit qualifying purchases. AquaCompat receives commission reports from Amazon, not your name, address or order details. Amazon explains what it collects in the Amazon.com Privacy Notice, and the affiliate disclosure explains how the links are marked.

Product photos in the product boxes on buyer guide and setup pages are loaded from Amazon's image servers. When one of those pages loads, your browser requests the images from Amazon, which receives the same basic request information any web server does, such as your IP address and browser type. Pages without product boxes make no requests to Amazon.

Hosting requests: The hosting provider may keep request logs. Amazon images and links: Amazon receives requests under its own policy. Email contact: The team receives what you choose to send.
External requests have their own privacy context. Based on the accompanying guide and its cited data.

What about the other sites AquaCompat links to?

Each page lists the published sources behind its figures, such as FishBase, Seriously Fish, university extension papers and the Merck Veterinary Manual, and species photos credit their authors on Wikimedia Commons. Those links open external sites only when you click them, and each site has its own privacy policy. AquaCompat has no control over what they collect.

What happens if you email AquaCompat?

If you write to report an error, AquaCompat receives your email address and whatever you include in the message. That information is used only to check and answer your report and is not added to any mailing list, shared or sold. Messages are kept only as long as they are needed to handle the report. You can ask at any time for a message you sent to be deleted.

What rights do you have over your data?

Because the site itself collects no personal data, there is usually nothing held about you to access, correct or delete. If you have emailed AquaCompat, you can ask what is held, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted, and the request will be handled without charge. For data held in the hosting provider's server logs or by Amazon, those companies' own policies and request processes apply. The site is a general hobby reference and is not directed at children.

How will changes to this policy be announced?

Any change will be published on this page with a new effective date, and the updated date at the top of the page will change at the same time. A change that adds any kind of data collection, such as analytics or advertising, will be made here before it takes effect on the site. Questions about this policy can be sent through the AquaCompat contact page.

Effective date: 21 October 2026.
